John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC)

The John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) provides supercomputer capacity for projects in science, research and industry in the fields of modelling and computer simulation. NIC is a joint foundation of the three Helmholtz Centres Forschungszentrum Jülich, Deutsches Elektronensynchrotron DESY, and GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung and the Goethe University Frankfurt. It supports computational science in Germany and Europe. The institute`s mission is to research, apply, and promote cutting-edge computing strategies. In addition, the NIC`s innovative core and research topics include methods of machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven modelling, energy-efficient technologies and ground-breaking technologies such as quantum computing or neuromorphic computing.

NIC Symposium 2027

The 13th NIC Symposium will take place from 25th to 26th of February 2027. It gives an overview of the activities of the John von Neumann Institute for Computing (NIC) and of the results obtained by research groups supported by the NIC.

GCS/NIC Computing Time Call

Computing time periods are yearly - with the possibility of application twice per year - and will begin 1 May and 1 November each year. Applications for the next period (1 May 2027 to 30 April 2028) may be submitted from 11 January to 15 February 2027, 17:00 CET.

NIC Excellence Project 2026/1

The NIC Peer Review Board awards the title "NIC Excellence Project" to outstanding simulation projects. The board honours Dr. Alexander Schug (KIT / Scientific Computing Center) for his project "PROFOUND: Foundation Model for Protein Dynamics and Design"
